Week 3

According to the “Rolling Stone’ magazine they conducted a list of top 50 guitarists of all time, and there is no woman listed on that list!

Rock music is mainly dominated by males and is therefore strongly categorised as very masculine. Mavis Bayton suggest
that, “male fans buy a guitar; female fans buy a poster”. This highlights the fact that both gender reacts in a different way as to what they desire. For example, for a girl they may wish to have their idol on their wall to worship.

As seen in one of Prince’s live performance the electric guitar is known as an extension of the male body, which shows the powerfulness of the performer and rock is usually performed in an aggressive and unruly manner.

In addition, Marvis Bayton also states that, “as girls grows up they learn how to be feminine and not engage in male activity”. This suggest that females are usually stereotype as polite, kind and gentle so if a female does play the guitar they may not be taken seriously.

  1. This is quite a good assessment of some of Bayton's thoughts. Perhaps you could have discussed the actual content of rock music a little though.
